Medical Mortality Surveillance Division: Supports the Armed Forces Medical Examiner Systems by maintaining the DoD Medical Mortality Registry. The division is organized into two subdivisions, the "Alert" component, which is designed to rapidly detect mortality due to unexplained or infectious diseases, and the "Registry" component which has the broader mission of analyzing all active duty deaths for trends and preventable and/or modifiable risk factors

The Johns Hopkins University - Applied Physics Laboratory: The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a not-for-profit center for engineering, research, and development. APL is a division of one of the world's premier research universities, Johns Hopkins. Our 399 - acre campus, is north of Washington, DC, and home to 4,300 men and women. We recruit and hire the best and the brightest from top colleges, 68% of which are engineers and scientists. We work on more than 400 programs that protect our homeland and advance the nation's vision in research and space science, at an annual funding level of about $800 Million. APL is also designated as a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC).

The Laboratory has been a major asset to the nation since it was organized to help the war effort in 1942, 3 months after Pearl Harbor. We're proud of our heritage from those early days and the can-do attitude and spirit of dedication to the nation's welfare that are still major elements of our culture.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration: The GIMMS Group's primary focus is to provide scientific Earth systems research, through the use of satellite remote sensing. Much of our research activities revolve around the use of timeseries analysis tools in the exploration of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) archive, which spans over 20 years (1982-present). From this data we have been able to find correlations between sensor derived information (primarily the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-NDVI) and desertification, Rift Valley Fever Outbreaks, variations in the length of the vegetational growing cycle in higher Northern Latitudes. Other projects focus on the use of AVHRR thermal channels for land surface profile retrieval, TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Monitoring Mission) data for delineation of fire activity, Landsat moderate resolution imagery for deforestation projects and SeaWiFS (Sea Wide Field of view Sensor) and MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrometer) information for the creation of Millenium data sets that bridge the timeseries gap between the AVHRR data archive and these new satellite senors systems. Additionally, the GIMMS group provides contract monitoring and technical expertise to the Commercial Remote Sensing Data Purchase project, which will result in the production of world wide land coverage of orthoectified Landsat TM (Thermatic Mapper) and MSS (Multi-Spectral Scanner) imagery.

Naval Environmental Preventive Medicine Unit - 2: The mission of NEPMU-2 is to support the Fleet and operational forces with preventive medicine expertise and specialized training, laboratory, and deployment capabilities to increase readiness, promote health and prevent disease. In July 2000, NEPMU-2 was assigned the Forward Deployed-Preventive Medicine Unit (FD-PMU) project transition. This future unit's mission would be to deploy to field to analyze for chemical, biological and radiological threats and project vectors of contamination in the interest of protecting military personnel in the operating theater. On 10 September 2002 FD-PMU East was commissioned.

Naval Health Research Center: The Respiratory Diseases Research Group (Dept. 166) conducts active, laboratory-based surveillance of U.S. military populations in unique environments to quantify and study the etiology of respiratory illnesses. We test specimens from our ongoing surveillance programs and from special investigations of febrile respiratory illness and pneumonia among military personnel or civilians (recruits, forces afloat, deployed forces, and outbreaks of concern, border populations). Leveraging these surveillance studies, we are able to address the safety and efficacy of drugs, vaccines, and new diagnostics as they impact operational health concerns. Results are provided to our customers, the Global Emerging Infectious Disease Surveillance and Response System, and other federal agencies.
